I agree with your assessment . I divide the 80's into 3 parts .
80 - 82 early Brent ( you could sneak in the Brent part of 79)
83 - 86 The "junky Jerry" era .
87 - 89 Late Brent ( you could toss in the respective part of 90 here )
Since we started by talking about 84, i should say I find shows from this era, uneven, but sometimes interesting, and sometimes quite good . There is something "funky" in this era, both in the good and bad sense of the word .
That "comeback" , post coma period seems too clean, comparatively .
There is a sort of wounded quality to some of Garcia's songs at this time , that feels so real .

Yes , I have had that one for , well ,not to long after they played the show !
